ISO  14001:2004 Environmental Management System 
The environmental management system covers the activities of Cleveland Potash Limited at Boulby Mine including the tailings facility and outfall and that part of the railway line running from the mine to Carlin Howe. 

The EMS is focused towards legal compliance and to demonstrate that Cleveland Potash Limited complies with all relevant legislation, it also  provides a framework for Cleveland Potash Limited to control the environmental impacts of its activities, products and services, and to continually improve its environmental performance.

Environmental Policy, Aims and Objectives

CPL is committed to continual environmental improvement and has developed a Company Environmental Policy with specific Aims and Objectives. 

The Policy, Aims and Objectives have been considered and approved at the highest level within CPL and are stated below.

Environmental Policy

Cleveland Potash Limited will:

  • Carry out its business and operations in a manner that avoids, reduces or controls any adverse effect on the environment and local community.
  • Operate within standards required by environmental law, regulations or codes of practice.
  • Effectively use resources by making efficient use of energy and raw materials.
  • Operate an Environmental Management System to International Standards.
  • Set objectives, targets and action plans to ensure continual environmental improvement.
  • Control and where possible reduce emissions to the environment.

Aims and Objectives

Cleveland Potash Limited will:

  • Conduct regular performance reviews and act upon the results to ensure compliance with EU, national laws and company policy.
  • Undertake emissions monitoring where required to verify the effectiveness of environmental management. & controls.
  • Promote recycling of waste.
  • Provide adequate resources, staff and training so those employees at all levels recognise and are able to fulfil their responsibilities.
  • Develop, maintain and test emergency procedures in conjunction with the relevant authorities.
  • Promote and maintain open dialogue with the local community to ensure appropriate response to their needs and concerns.
  • Support research and development, directly and indirectly, or scientific knowledge aimed at improvement of all aspects of environmental performance.
  • Make audited annual statements of Environmental Performance.
